What I do: Another Day in the Bunker

I thought some might find this interesting. Most who work outside of tech (and many inside tech) never see data centers like this. To get to our company servers in this hosting facility I have to pass through two man traps and a total of 5 doors with hand scanners. In addition, each rack of equipment is locked with a unique 6 digit code. There are hundreds of cameras inside the main datacenter and guards constantly watching from a secure room.

System Rescue CD to the.. rescue!

![](http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5211/5421694137_c92bd1b195.jpg =160x) Here’s the scenario.. It’s 1 am and I have to shut down a critical linux server to relocate it in a rack to make room for new equipment. It should have been a 5 minute job.. but on powering up the server it refused to boot past printing the word ‘Grub‘ on the screen. This isn’t good.. this server is needed by a couple hundred thousand customers and rebuilding it wasn’t planned or scheduled.

What I do: Mysql Reporting Date Range Cheat Sheet

That is if you need a report for ‘last month’ that runs from the first to last day of the previous month.. or previous 3 months etc but not include any days in the current month.   Here is a small collection of queries…

Subtitles

So I saw the amazing movie Pan’s Labyrinth the other night.. which is in Spanish. In talking about it with some friends several said they don’t watch foreign movies unless they are dubbed into English. Why you might ask… because they don’t like to read the subtitles. This wasn’t just a preference.. the ones who said this actually seemed offended/annoyed that they had to read something.. ‘I don’t go to a movie to read.

Jared has left the building!

Well I haven’t left just yet… but as of the end of January I will no longer be in the employ of American City Business Journals. After nearly six years with this great company I have decided it’s time to take on some new challenges so as not to get too comfortable. So now I will be joining Mirapoint (maker of carrier grade email systems) as part of their Professional Services team.
